Brand Lipitor (Pfizer)
Indication:
Lipitor is cholesterol lowering medication that works by blocking the production of cholesterol in the body. It reduces the bad cholesterol which is the LDL cholesterol and the total cholesterol in the blood. By lowering the cholesterol, sickness such as heart disease and hardening of the arteries may be prevented to avoid heart attack, stroke, and vascular disease.
How to take:
Take Lipitor exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Do not take it in larger amounts and for prolonged periods of time unless prescribed by the doctor. Always follow the directions on the prescription label.
Take each tablet with a full glass of water with food or in an empty stomach. As it is usually taken once a day, try to take each dose the same time each day. Lipitor is only part of a complete program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely. Lipitor may need to be taken for a long term basis depending on the diagnosis of the doctor.
Precautions:
Foods that are high in fat or cholesterol should be avoided during Lipitor therapy as it may reduce the effectiveness of the drug if strict cholesterol lowering diet is not followed. Alcohol drinking is also avoided as alcohol is known to raise triglyceride levels and may also cause liver damage. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Lipitor and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
