Rifampicin is an antibiotic that is used to treat tuberculosis. It inactivates a bacterial chemical called RNA-polymerase. These TB bacteria use RNA-polymerase to create proteins and make their own genetic information. The TB bacteria cannot survive without this chemical.

Indications:

Rifampicin kills bacteria that cause tuberculosis. Rifampicin is combined with other drugs to treat tuberculosis, to kill the bacteria and prevent the spread of infection. It is also used to treat infections such as leprosy, legionnaire′s disease and other staphylococcal infections. Rifampicin is also used to prevent certain types of meningitis.

How to take:

Take Rifampicin as directed by the doctor. It comes in a capsule taken by mouth usually prescribed once a day up for at least 3 months up to 2 years. This drug should be taken on an empty stomach. Precautions:

Before taking Rifampicin, inform the doctor of any allergic reaction to rifampicin and other medications.
